    Preheat oven to 350°F.

    Mix bread crumbs and butter lightly with a fork.

    Cover bottom of buttered baking dish with crumbs.

    Spread half the apples over crumbs.

    Combine sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, lemon rind, and lemon juice. Sprinkle half of this mixture over the apples.

    Repeat layers with remaining apples and spice mixture.

    Cover with remaining crumbs and add hot water.

    Cover dish at first so crumbs don't brown too rapidly.

    Bake for 40 minutes.

    Serve with cream or hard sauce.
