Instructions

    Preheat oven to 350°F (or 325°F for a glass baking pan).

    Melt the butter and mix with graham cracker crumbs (and sugar if using).

    Press crumb mixture firmly onto the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan.

    Bake the crust for 8 minutes.

    Layer the remaining ingredients over the hot crust in this order:

    Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk evenly over all layers. Do NOT stir.

    Bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and edges are bubbly.

    Cool completely on a wire rack (about 1 hour) before cutting into bars.

💡 Cook's Notes

**Don't overcook!** If you bake to the "caramel" stage, the bars will be too hard to enjoy. For an interesting crisp top, sprinkle Demerara sugar on top before baking. This recipe has many variations in proportions - some use more or less coconut, some omit the butterscotch chips entirely. Adjust to your taste. The simpler "vague" version: melt butter in the pan, then just layer all ingredients and bake at 350°F for 30-40 minutes.
